Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations following England's loss in the second Ashes against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, after the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
