The action from the DNC to withhold the public viewing of its internal autopsy report on the 2024 election seems remarkable yet entirely predictable. Opposed to hard truths, the Democrats' governing body often functions more like a communications shop rather than a political organization committed to building local power capable of prevailing at the polls.
An Environment of Conformity
Reluctant to challenge the prevailing attitude demanding unity, the committee has continued within that legacy all through 2025. Making public such a report could have demonstrated that party leaders are interested to encourage open debate about the missteps that enabled Donald Trump to become president again. Yet, the committee is acting as if there's nothing to be learned following the electoral catastrophe of 2024.
"Here’s our North Star: is this good for winning elections? If not, it’s a distraction from the core mission," a rationale which was presented to justify concealing the analysis.
Critical Problems an Analysis Could Have Explored
An autopsy report of substance would tackle head-on certain uncomfortable matters. Among them are:
- Electoral Alienation: Losing among millions of voters who supported the Democratic ticket during the previous election was decisive in the close recent race.
- A Choice to Seek Re-election: The stubborn insistence of a party leader to seek re-election, and an extremely delayed withdrawal, is seen by some as robbing the party's base of a competitive nomination process.
- Failing Everyday Americans: While facing inflation, the electoral effort reportedly bowing to corporate donors' interests while failing to confront the effects of profit-seeking.
- A Gaza Impact: An unwillingness to reconsider a stance on the situation in Gaza is cited as alienating significant blocs, especially among young people, Arab American communities, Muslim voters.
- Losing Youth Support: Research shows a major drop-off in votes for the candidate from young voters.
A Record of Evasion
The decision to withhold is consistent with a longstanding habit of evading hard truths. It recalls an episode in which nearly all Democratic officeholder in Washington acquiesced to an incumbent's insistence on running for re-election until a disastrous televised debate led to an exit.
At the same time, a significant majority of Democratic voters were consistently telling surveyors that they did not want that candidate to seek re-election.
Financial Concerns
A substantive autopsy could investigate matters regarding campaign spending, including how much money flowed to insider consultants and advertising contractors over the course of an electoral effort that burned through an enormous sum during the general election.
A Larger Problem
Fundamentally, the blockage surrounding this report highlights a deference to the existing power structure that oversaw an unsuccessful national race. The message to rank-and-file members – which includes countless dedicated activists – appears to be that they cannot be trusted to know the lessons the leadership have learned based on an analysis based on extensive interviews.
A political entity incapable to critically review where it went wrong is unlikely to escape the pattern which was so helpful to the winning candidate.
