Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with deep backstory, a wide array of characters, and a gripping narrative showcasing divine entities, demons, and sinister influences growing in influence within the city.
Note: Spoilers for the third episode of the new season lie ahead.
The Combat-Oriented Party Unveiled
The third episode concluded with a huge suspense moment and introduced the initial group of adventurers who will separate from the central cast to embark on their own adventure, apart from the remaining groups.
The Soldiers table features Teor Pridesire (played by Travis), Thimble (Laura), Tyranny (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (Sam), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie Daymond).
Why Split the Party?
With a large ensemble, it was evident from the outset that maintaining everyone at a single group would be unworkable.
Hence, the opening chapters of the new season serve as an Overture, intertwining the characters’ stories before dividing into three smaller tables: Soldiers, Strategists, and Questers.
Characteristics of the Soldiers Table
Per the Dungeon Master, the combat-focused party is for players who are drawn to a typically action-packed combat and conflict-driven story mode where peaceful solutions are rare.
At first glance, figures such as the reluctant priest Wicander might seem unsuited, but the events of the latest installment demonstrate why these five characters are ideally matched for the combat party.
Motivations for Departure
For one thing, the party has a clear idea where to proceed after a intense opening clash with the enemy group.
A former ally of Thjazi Fang—whose death started the story’s plot—manipulated the foes for his own means, breaking into the secret base, attacking the rogue, and taking all the magical artifacts to dispose of.
The antagonist then cleared his obligations and ran away to a secure base in the northern region, above Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire hot on his heels.
Personal Motivations
Moreover, each member has a personal reason to exit the metropolitan area:
- The agile hero, as the companion and closest confidant, wants vengeance.
- Kattigan is familiar with Timmony and warns that it is a nasty place.
- The strong character and The cleric, having disobeyed his relatives’ demands to eliminate Teor and instead freed him, have no other options.
- But, their position as important members in the influential clan could enable the team enter places they typically wouldn’t be able to.
- Additionally, The grateful character pledged a life debt to The cleric for his deliverance and will now go with him everywhere.
Wanted and Hunted
Lastly, all of them are hunted by the rulers that control the setting for a variety of reasons, making staying in the city dangerous:
- The rogue and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
- Tyranny and The cleric defied the influential house and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
- The fighter is targeted for elimination by the clan.
This leaves them little choice but to journey toward the northern region in pursuit of Casimir.
