Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying these treatments need to be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically have a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Users who have come off the medication explain a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become ravenous," said an individual.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
