A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” stated the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in national projects. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
